Students on Computers

USD #327 has been able to provide access to technology for your student for the past several years using Google Workspace for Education. Google Workspace for Education has recently updated its parental consent requirements. This news story details how we use Google Workspace for Education at USD #327 Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo, provides resources for commonly asked questions, and is a companion to the hard copy letter coming home with your child this week that asks for your permission, as required, for continued student use of their platform.

Google Workspace for Education is a set of education productivity tools from Google, including Classroom, Docs, Sheets, and more, used by tens of millions of students and teachers worldwide. At USD #327 Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo, students will use their Google Workspace for Education accounts to complete assignments, communicate with their teachers, sign into their Chromebooks, and learn digital citizenship skills.

The information at this link bit.ly/whatgoogleinfo provides answers to common questions about what Google can and can’t do with your child’s personal information, including:

  • What personal information does Google collect?
  • How does Google use this information?
  • Will Google disclose my child’s personal information?
  • Does Google use student personal information for users in K-12 schools to target advertising?
  • Can my child share information with others using the Google Workspace for Education account?

On October 12th, a hard copy of this information and a request for your consent will be sent home. Please sign that request and return it promptly to your child's Homeroom Teacher (K-6) or Advisory Teacher (7-12) to indicate that you have read the notice and give your consent. To be clear, USD #327 Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo will only access verified applications that meet security and privacy requirements. For a complete list of third-party apps that students may use at USD #327 Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo, please visit this link: USD #327 Verified Access List.

If you have reservations about providing your consent and would like to discuss this further, please contact your child’s building principal or Dan Magie at dmagie@usd327.org to further discuss this issue.

Sincerely,

Dan Magie
